iPhone Missing Features
iPhone’s Missing Features
Though the Apple iPhone is an amazing device with numerous features, it has many deficiencies that need to be discussed. Among those deficiencies are lack of third party support, and the limited choices for service providers. When these issues are addressed and corrected, the iPhone will be one killer device.
In any event, here are some of the Apple iPhone’s missing features;
Third Party iPhone Support
Apple initially made the iPhone off limits to allowing anything other than Apple’s own developed software. Third party applications could not be installed. Apple claimed that the decision was for security reasons, however, Apple finally succumbed to public pressure and released a Software Development Kit, Up until that point, only hacking the iPhone was the way in.
iPhone Browser Plug-Ins
The iPhone initially had almost non existent support for browser plug-ins such as flash and javascript. but has recently come to light. Better plug-in support for the Safari browser would make for a much more useful device. This is one of iPhone’s features that is missing.
Carrier Choices
Being forced to be locked to Cingular with a 2 year contract was the initial choice for US subscribers. Fortunately, the rest of the world is jumping on board. The iPhone is now available in Australia, and Canada to name a few more countries. If Apple opted for the iPhone to be used with more carriers, it would mean that the iPhone is much more attainable and of course appealing globally.
Phone and Data Price Plans
At first the iPhone was available only to those with deep pockets. Or you could afford the iPhone but not the monthly fees for the data plans. Rogers Communicatrions in Canada recently announced a limited time data plan rate decrease for new iPhone subscribers. The plan starts at $30 CAD per month for a three year contract. Much better, and suprisingly - at the demand of public outcry in Canada.
Removable Battery
The iPhone has a non user replaceable battery. This can potentially be a huge problem in emergency situations and when traveling. The one saving grace to this situation is that all iPod 30-pin dock connector accessories will work with the iPhone. nevertheless, this is still an important iPhone feature that is missing and should be addressed.
Front Facing Camera
The meager 2 mega-pixel camera on the back of the iPhone is disappointing. First in that is is only 2 megapixel, and second that it is not front facing. had this been a front facing camera, it would be a perfect feature for video chatting. Now with the introduction of 3G, it is even more obvious to be a huge missing feature.
Calendar Data Input
Just like on the iPod, the iPhone’s calendar is read-only application and must be synced from a computer. The iPhone does have a keyboard, so why doesn’t Apple allow the calendar accept input?
Over the Air
Apple does n to have the proper licensing, so this may not necessarily be a missing feature, but a situation beyond their control. Over the Air downloads from the iTunes Store seems to be a contractual limitation between Apple and the record companies. If Apple can amend their agreements with all of the labels to allow for OTA distribution, this will solve this matter.
